Salbutamol sulphate
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of acute asthma attack; bronchial asthma & other conditions associated w/ reversible airway obstruction eg, bronchitis & emphysema. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral inhalation Adult Relief of acute asthma or before exercise 100-400 mcg. Maintenance or prophylaxis 100-400 mcg bid to qid. Max: 2.4 mg daily. Childn Episodic asthma or before exercise 100-200 mcg. Maintenance or prophylaxis 100-200 mcg bid to qid. Max: 1.2 mg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or milk proteins.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if bronchospasm occurs. Deterioration of asthma control w/ rapidly increasing use. Patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis, cardiac insufficiency, hypokalaemia, myocardial ischaemia, tachyarrhythmia & hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy; w/ underlying severe heart disease eg, ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmia or severe heart failure. Take regular anti-inflammatory controller medication daily if more than twice wkly dosing is needed. Monitor K levels in severe asthma. Assess resp or cardiac symptoms eg, dyspnoea & chest pain. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Peripheral vasodilation resulting to small increase in heart rate, palpitations & tremor. Headache, hypersensitivity reactions (angioedema, urticaria, hypotension & collapse), bronchospasm, cough, mouth & throat irritation, hypokalaemia, muscle cramps, hyperactivity, restlessness, dizziness & cardiac arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia & extrasystoles, myocardial ischaemia.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ additional adrenergic drugs. Potentiated action w/ MAOIs or TCA. Inhibited effect w/ β-blockers eg, propranolol. Increased hypokalaemia w/ xanthines, corticosteroids or K-excreting diuretics.
